New research from 2024 has examined the connection between Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and access to health coverage. The data revealed that approximately 13 million people under the age of 65 were receiving income through SSDI or SSI in 2021. Of these individuals, most (about 12.9 million) qualified for either Medicare, Medicaid, or both, highlighting the significant role these programs play in providing health coverage for those with disabilities​.
